Educ 6810 - Week Four Activity One

The language techniques that I used were
  • Grammatical Techniques (Main Heading: Brand New Graduate to speak at National Conference)
  • Rhyme (Sub Heading: Girls: A Dog’s Best Friend, ‘Til The Very End)
  • Alliteration (Sub Heading: Nifty Nails)

The persuasion techniques I used were
  • Association: The assignment was about portraying me and what it means to be a woman. I basically used the “Nifty Nails” picture and headline because it is a great way to blow off steam. I agree that it costs money and it is a pain to keep up with fake nails; however, as a working woman, I enjoyed being pampered every once in a while.
  • Plain Folk: Going along with the assignment, I was trying to ‘challenge the mainstream’ by showing that ‘plain folk’ like myself have great opportunities, as well as celebrities. I was chosen to speak at a National Teaching Conference right after my college graduation.
  • Warm & Fuzzy: I decided to show the animal lover in me. I feel that this picture shows my HUGE dog; however, the headline says how girls can be dog’s best friends as well. This I felt would reach out to pet owners.

  1. You seem to be a warm and fuzzy type person and I'm older and cynical. That is what makes us so different. Your interpretation reminds of a young girl with the world at your feet. Mine have lost the tread. Congratulations on your conference presentation. I know what a huge accomplishment that is.

  2. I like the technique of the design you chose. It is eye catching. You seem to address to important things to a girls image, nails and dogs. The readers of your magazine would probably be younger girls who can relate the images you posted. I think the rhyming technique is a good tool to use in order to engage the readers.

  3. I like the technique you used "plain folk." It does challenge the mainstream and show that everyone can have these great opportunities if they work hard.

  4. I don't see any challenge to mainstream media gender stereotypes. The cover catches the eye and I am sure it would attract and keep a woman's eye more than a man's. I see you used Humor and techniques of association to feminine qualities (nails and bright colors).

  5. I see how you have challenge mainstream media stereotypes because normally they say that dogs are men's best friend. I can also see how you challenged it by showing a successful young woman because men are seen as being more the successful type. However, the nails picture doesn't really challenge mainstream media gender stereotypes, instead that picture enforces them, giving the impression that girls like to get their nails done and therefore are dainty and fragile.
Your dog is big and beautiful; I think this also challenges the gender roles because girls are typically seen with tiny dogs.

  6. Nice graphics work on your cover. Good persuasive techniques and a challenge of traditional values with the picture you selected.
