6816 - Why Information Literacy is Important in a Democratic Society

- When watching the video, I realized just how many people were using the internet and digital media to support President Obama before his election.  I think that it is fascinating that in other elections - the people who were on the internet and were seen on facebook had the most votes.

- I think that it is insane that someone was in prison for blogging their beliefs!

- I feel that parents should help their children with the internet at home; hoewever, as educators, I feel that our job is not only teaching our curriculm - but we are to be teaching life lessons and how to live in the "real world".  I think that we need to use every opportunity to help them learn life skills.  We are using technology to teach and they are using technology to learn.

- I agree that it is time for us to bring the "real world" together with the "virtual world".

WIKIPEDIA:
- I know that this website can be edited by anyone.  However, if information is found on this website and it can be triangulated with other websites' information, then it can be used.

  1. Not only did the internet and digital media help elect Obama but it also helped topple regimes in the Middle East.It also is feared to be the reason some kids commit suicide. It is a very powerful tool and should be treated with the respect all powerful tools demand.

  2. I agree with the statement that it is crazy that someone would be imprisoned for blogging about what they believe; however, I feel that teachers are somewhat imprisoned as well. We can't say or do anything without walking on egg-shells. We could get fired or sued for the minimal offense.
I think it is a good idea to back up information found on Wikipedia with other resources on the Internet (to prove its validation).

  3. I agree that Wikipedia could be used as a starting point when researching a topic. Students could use it to find other sources of information. I like the idea of having them triangulate the information before being able to use Wikipedia as a source.

  4. I like that you stated "We are using technolgy to teach and they are using technology to learn" We as educators need to teach the life skills to prepare these students for the real world. They are our future.

  5. I agree that "life skills" need to be taught to students. Often students don't have an "real world" experience until they are thrust into in. As educators, we need to prepare these students for their future.

  6. Information is powerful! We must teach our children to use it information ethically and morally! I believe this is why every teacher needs to engage students in information literacy tasks in school. I hope by the end of this class you will have developed some meaningful ways of doing this in your own classrooms!
